The Tithe and T’rumah Laws Ignored by Pastors and Christians

Sunday after Sunday, the words, “Will a man rob God” are spoken to millions of believers across the country and around the world from Malachi 3: 8-10. While many pastors say we are under grace and not under the law, the New Testament does say we are under the Law of Christ, not the Mosiac Law. Yet many pastors who claim we are still under the tithing laws, don’t realize they are corrupting the law because there are 24 Laws regarding tithing that must kept if you are following the tithe law. The question is, why do pastors and churches ignore these laws from the list of the 613 laws and commands of the Old Testament. If you follow the tithe law then you must follow all 613 laws everyday. And if you break one of them you are guiltly of all of them.  When you read these laws below, you will notice that not one single person who claims to biblically tithe actucally keeps or follows the tithe laws of the Bible. The 24 laws below are straight from the scriptures and explain what God expected as tithes, taxes and t’rumah offering from the Hebrew people. Notice in the list that everthing God requested in these tithe laws for the Levites and priests were all associated with livestock and crops and never money.  The word T’rumah is what the priest received from the harvest, which was a heave offering called a tithe of the tithe given to them by the Levites. The tithe laws below explain how the tithe was handled. And you can be certain, money was never paid as a tithe. So when you look at these 24 tithe laws, you’ll see that modern day churches are not teaching the real biblical tithe. Since many pastors like to say the law is done away with, why do they like to commute the tithe laws into money and keep them as law. Judge for yourself what the scriuptures say about tithing. 402. That an uncircumcised person shall not shall not eat of the t’rumah (heave offering), and the 
same applies to other holy things. This rule is inferred from the law of the Paschal offering, by 
similarity of phrase (Ex. 12:44-45 and Lev. 22:10) but it is not explicitly set forth in the Torah. 
Traditionally, it has been learnt that the rule that the uncircumcised must not eat holy things is an 
essential principle of the Torah and not an enactment of the Scribes.


403. Not to alter the order of separating the t’rumah and the tithes; the separation be in the order first-fruits at the beginning, then the t’rumah, then the first tithe, and last the second tithe (Ex.22:28)


404. To give half a shekel every year (to the Sanctuary for provision of the public sacrifices) (Ex. 
30:13)


405. That a priest [kohein] who is unclean shall not eat of the t’rumah (Lev.22:3-4)

406. That a person who is not a kohein or the wife or unmarried daughter of a kohein shall not eat of the t’rumah (Lev. 22:10)


407. That a sojourner with a kohein or his hired servant shall not eat of the t’rumah (Lev. 22:10)

408. Not to eat unholy things [Heb. tevel] (something from which the t’rumah and tithe have not yet been separated) (Lev. 22:15)


409. To set apart the tithe of the produce (one tenth of the produce after taking out t’rumah) for the Levites (Lev. 27:30; Num.18:24)

410. To tithe cattle (Lev. 27:32)


411. Not to sell the tithe of the heard (Lev. 27:32-33)


412. That the Levites shall set apart a tenth of the tithes, which they had received from the Israelites, and give it to the Priest [Heb.kohanim] (called the t’rumah of the tithe) (Num. 18:26)


413. Not to eat the second tithe of cereals outside Jerusalem (Deut.12:17)


414. Not to consume the second tithe of the vintage outside of Jerusalem (Deut. 12:17)


415. Not to consume the second tithe of the oil outside of Jerusalem (Deut. 12:17)


416. Not to forsake the Levites (Deut. 12:19); but their gifts (dues) should be given to them, so that they might rejoice therewith on each and every festival


417. To set apart the second tithe in the first, second, fourth and fifth years of the sabbatical cycle to be eaten by its owner in Jerusalem (Deut. 14:22)


418. To set apart the second tithe in the third and sixth year of the sabbatical cycle for the poor 
(Deut. 14:28-29)


419. To give the kohein [i.e. Priest] the due portions of the carcass of cattle (Deut. 18:3)


420. To give the first of the fleece to the priest (Deut. 18:4)


421. To set apart a small portion of the grain, wine and oil for the Priest [Heb. kohein] [Heb. t’rumah g’dolah i.e.(the great heave-offering) (Deut.18:4)


422. Not to expend the proceeds of the second tithe on anything but food and drink (Deut. 26:14)


423. Not to eat the Second Tithe, even in Jerusalem, in a state of uncleanness, until the tithe had 
been redeemed (Deut. 26:14)


424. Not to eat the Second Tithe, when mourning (Deut. 26:14)


425. To make the declaration, when bringing the second tithe to the Sanctuary (Deut. 26:13)

 

Even in these tithe laws, you also see that the priests received first sheerings of sheep’s wool, not the first tenth of shekels, silver or gold. So why do people persist in ignorance even when the scriptures prove tithing is not money but food. I guess the problem is that people don’t read their Bibles but depend on the interpretations of men.

It is evident from studying the scriptures that the only people who paid tithe in the Bible were the Owners of the annual agricultural havest and the owners of the flocks and herds on the yearly increase. These were the only ones who paid the tithe. So that there is no confusion, I will provide a list of occupations in the Bible that  were not required to pay any tithes of money.

Doctors and Physicians 2 Chr 16:12, Jer 8:22, Lk 4:24

Hair Cutters 2 Sam 14:26

Constructions workers Ex 36:1

Officers Jos 24:1, 1 Chrn 23:4

Tax collectors Mat 10:3, Lk 5:27

Nurses 2 Sam 4:4, 1 Ki 1:4

Loggers, Ec 10:9

Teahers 1 Ch 27:32, Jn 3:10

Tent Makers Acts 18:3

Well diggers 2 Sam 17:18, Jn 4:12

Jewelers Ex 39:8-14

Inn keepers 1 Ki 4:28

Merchants Neh. 3:31

Field Laborers 1 Sam. 8:12

This short list should give you an idea that all non-farmer and non-herder occupations did not tithe in Israel. Now, would they have given offerings from their wages, of course. It is also important to note that people who worked in the fields and in animal husbanddry to earn a wage did not tithe either because they were not the owners of the agricultural products or the animals. God defines what is to be tithed and he made it clear throughout the Bible that money was not acceptable as a tithe.

So what does the Bible tell Believers to do about giving money to the institutional church? But before I do that, the Ekklesia (Believers)  is not an institution, it is a organism and when it becomes an institution, it becomes an empire of traditions of men instead of the commandments of Yahweh. So, when you give the first thing the Bible commands of Believers is that they take care of personal financial matters first. 1 Timothy 5:8 says, “People who don’t take care of their relatives, and especially their own families, have given up their faith. They are worse than someone who doesn’t have faith in the Lord” (CEV).  Whether you believe it or not, God first requirment is that you take care of your financial responsibilities first before you allow any pastor or church have access to your banks account like a ATM debit card withdrawing money as they see fit from your finances. When you are single, perhaps you can give more money, but when you marry and start having multiple children, your first obligation is to your wife and children. The order is always a relationship with God first, family second and the so-called church, which is accurately difined as the Ekklesia (called out ones) is third in theological peaking order. You family has the first claim to your paycheck not the church. As you can see from the verse that you are obligated to help your relatives before you help the church if you have to choose between the two. The two groups Paul named in the verse is relatives (parents, grandparents, widows, aunts, uncles etc.). So if your grandparents are in need and you can help them, then the church has no authority over your money if a choice has to be made between church and your grandmother. The money goes to the grandparents according to the scriptures.

One way people try to obfuscate the scripture is that they try to get you to start tithing money at 2 or 3 percent and build up to ten percent over time. This method is totally unscriptural. You never hear God Tell Israel that since tenth might be to hard to start out I’ll let you start at 2, 3 or 4 percent and build up to ten percent. If you examine 2 Co 8:11-12 you will see something that is amazing about Paul’s insight on money. In 2 Cor 8:10-12 it reads, “And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it.  So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.”  The context here is that the Corinthians had started a year ago to help people in Jereusalem who had a finanical need. Paul encouraged them to finish what they started. He wanted them to give by their ability, according to what they had. Now the amazing truth is that when you look at 1 Tim. 5:8 obligating you to your family first, then when a need arises in the community of believers and are asked to support it, the words by your ability/according to what you have speak volumes because Paul is trying to say that if you could not get past meeting the necessities of your own household and yet still had a desire to give the support those in need outside, God would still find that intention honorable becuase it was a desire in your heart. So in cases where a need exists and your don’t have the money to help, but have the desire to do it but can’t, God still will be pleased with you. Now how freeing is that. That’s why you should never feel guilty if you don’t have money to give. As long as you have a willing desire to give, God will bless and honor you for that.

If you are a Pastor who says God changed is mind and decided to commute His holy tithe received from owners of agricultural gain and owner of herds and flocks in Israel to cash money from everyone on the glove who works a wage earner professions then I have some questions for you to answer so I can be clear that God wants money as a tithe.

1. How is that Jesus who lived under the law got away with never paying a tithe, and yet I as a Gentile have a pay ten percent of my income to the church or be cused with a curse? Do you ever see the Messiah pay ten percent from his cerpentry work as a tithe?
2. Name the law or person and where the lived in the Bible who changed the Biblical tithe from animals and agriculture…..to money?
3. How did God reveal in His word that the tithe was forever now money and no longer crops or cattle?
4. Most importanly, when did God reveal and authorize you as a pastor or the church to change His tithe to cash money? And if He did, when did He do and how did God do it.

It is important to note that when a letter was written to the Gentiles in Acts 15:1-31, nowhere in the instructions from the Jerusalem did they instruct Gentile to tithe.  The letter stated in verses 23-29 that they will do well if agstain from thing offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. So if tithing was important to pass along go Gentile believers in the Most High, why did they forget to instruct them on this new required cash tithe requirement or be cursed? When I wrote the book, Kleptomaniac: Who’s Really Robbing God Anyway I knew I would be dismembered from the institutional church.  When you paying ten percent of your income to the church,which the Bible does not require, you are being exploited and the church is making merchandise of you and the Bible backs this up in 2 Pe 2:3 which reads, “And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.”  This new monetary tithe teaching, you are like a money tree to be shaken. And if you don’t tithe, dire consequences  heralded from the pulpit on people who will not cough up ten percent and are stealing from God. Let me say this, don’t worre about those false words because they are not the words of the Bible but the traditions of men. “The Hebrew word for firstfruits is “bikkuwr” (Strong’s #1061).51 It is the first of the grain, fruit and crop harvested from the field. When Israel celebrated the three feasts, it was their acknowledgment that the fruits of the harvest were from Yahweh. Further, that means the firstfruits were from God’s labor not man’s labor. Let’s explain this in more detail. Everything we have comes from God. He gives us food, water, clouds, atmosphere, vapors, crops, grain, and animals to sustain life. For example, cotton comes from seed planted; our houses are built of wood, which comes from seed planted. God’s labor includes the rain, sunshine, and the right environment for cotton and trees to grow. This allows us to use cotton to make clothes and have wood to build homes. This could not happen without God using his labor to make things grow. So with God’s effort, he requires the firstfruits from His effort, not the effort that comes from man’s labor to build houses or when making clothes for example. Yahweh’s effort produced firstfruits and tithes; our labor involves planting and harvesting. And that’s the difference between man’s labor and God’s labor.52 The tithe and firstfruits always came from God’s effort/labor and not from what a person makes in income. That’s because we earn income from selling our labor to an employer for a price and receive a paycheck.
